You don't have to accept that getting older means slowing down.

You were never meant to spend your fifties, sixties and seventies worrying about every step, avoiding the stairs, or wondering whether this ache is simply "your age." Optimal Ageing shows you why — and exactly what to do about it.

Optimal Ageing book cover — How to Live Longer, Move Better and Stay Pain Free, by Steven McLean
You've probably heard it before

"It's just wear and tear."

"You're getting older."

"Just take some painkillers."

"Learn to live with it."

But what if much of that simply isn't true?

The question this book is built around

How many summers do you have left?

Not years on a calendar — summers where your body lets you actually live in them. Barbecues without wincing to sit down. Grandkids on your back, not just in your eyeline. Holidays you walk through instead of plan around. Move the slider to your age and see what's really at stake.

55
On average, that's roughly 28 summers ahead of you.
The only real question is how many of them you'll spend moving freely — and how many you'll spend managing pain you were told to just accept.

Each dot is one summer. The highlighted ones are the summers statistically ahead of you. This book is about making sure your body is capable enough to be fully present for every single one.

Illustrative only, based on general UK life expectancy data — not a personal medical estimate.

Written for one reader at a time

Is this you?

Optimal Ageing is written as a conversation — the one I wish every patient could have before pain starts dictating their life.

About the author

Steven McLean

Chartered Physiotherapist · Founder, Optimal Physio

I've worked as a physiotherapist since 2003, following an earlier degree in Sport and Exercise Science. Before founding Optimal Physio, I worked as a senior NHS physiotherapist — giving me a clear view of both public and private healthcare, and exactly where each one lets patients down.

Alongside clinical practice, I've spent more than twenty years officiating at the highest level of football, including the 2016 & 2026 Scottish Cup Final's, where performance, resilience and recovery were never optional. This book brings together everything I've learned from thousands of consultations into one practical guide — because I want it to help far more people than I could ever see in a clinic.
